A shark has been killed after it suffered injuries when it was caught and brought to shore in Magaluf, Metro UK reports.
The 8ft shark is said to have terrified holidaymakers at three beaches along the coast of the resort before it was caught.
But it had to be put down because of the nature of its injuries.
Video footage showed the shark on the sand at Can Pastilla beach, surrounded by crowds of holidaymakers either side of an area reserved for lifeguards and animal experts from Palma Aquarium.
The shark was killed
It was carried off the beach by the experts called in to inspect it, helped by lifeguards and local police.
One of the aquarium employees said it had suffered ‘irreversible damage’.
He said: ‘After a close examination by experts, a hook was found inside its mouth which had caused it irreversible damage.’
The spokesman said it had been given a sedative to minimise its suffering before being put down. The shark was spotted three times in three days.
Cala Major was closed on Sunday morning after the blue shark was spotted but the beach has since re-opened.
People shouted ‘Everyone out of the water’ after the fish was spotted and people kept an eye out from the rocks.
There was another sighting in Illtas, according to a local councillor, on Saturday afternoon.
He said it went to the shoreline between 12noon and 1pm and is believed to be the same one spotted in Cala Major.
A spokesman for the council said: ‘It approached the beach at Illetas yesterday between 12 and 1pm. It was kept under control and the beach is being watched as well today.
‘The one seen off Cala Major appears to be the same one. It has been kept under close watch since early morning.’
